LMG Marin to design the MS Green Ammonia

Grieg Edge

Grieg Edge has entered a contract with award-winning naval architect company LMG Marin to design the MS Green Ammonia. We expect a concept design to be finalised by the first half of 2022.

Together with Wärtsilä, Grieg Edge plans to launch one of the world’s first green ammonia fueled green ammonia tankers in 2024. The project development got partial funding from the Norwegian funding scheme Pilot-E in December 2020.

Award-winning

After a thorough process, Grieg Edge has decided to bring naval architect and ship designer LMG Marin to the ship’s design process. Located in Bergen, Norway, LMG Marin has close to 80 years of experience in ship design and can boast several award-winning ships. The latest award was for Norled’s hydrogen-ferry “Hydra”.

“LMG Marin are one of the frontrunners worldwide when it comes to innovative ship designs. Their competency and experience with hydrogen-fueled vessels will be valuable to us in this project.” Nicolai Grieg, Head of Grieg Edge

AIP by summer 2022

Together, the team will spend the next months developing different conceptual ideas for MS Green Ammonia, before they settle on a chosen concept design. The target is to get an Approval In Principle (AIP) from a class society by the end of the first half of 2022.

“LMG Marin is honoured to be selected by Grieg Edge to provide design services for MS Ammonia. We appreciate working with ambitious clients such as Grieg Edge that are pushing new green technologies to realization. Green ammonia is indeed a promising energy carrier for marine transport and we will do our utmost to see MS Green Ammonia on the water in 2024,” says Managing Director of LMG Marin, Torbjørn Bringedal.

With an AIP in place, detailed engineering will commence during the summer of 2022, with a scheduled launch of MS Green Ammonia in 2024.
